A section of leaders from the Western region have called for a fresh census in the region, arguing that an updated population count is crucial for the fair distribution of resources and development projects.

Speaking Amahoro in Sikhendu ward in Trans Nzoia County during the distribution of maize seeds, Deputy Speaker of the County Assembly, Obed Mahanga, emphasized the importance of accurate data in ensuring equitable government funding.

"The population of this region has grown significantly since the last census in 2019. If we continue relying on outdated figures, our people will be shortchanged in terms of resource allocation, infrastructure, and development projects," Mahanga stated.

The 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census conducted by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) recorded the following population figures for counties in the Western region Bungoma 1,670,570, Busia  893,681, Kakamega,  1,867,579, Vihiga 590,013. These figures brought the total population of the Western region to 5,021,843.

Trans Nzoia County had a population of 990,341, comprising 489,107 males, 501,206 females, and 28 intersex persons in 2019. The county had a population density of 397 persons per square kilometer, with an average household size of 4.4 persons.

However, based on an inter-censal growth rate of 3.6 percent projections estimated that by 2022, Trans Nzoia's population would reach 1,103,256, and by 2023, it would rise further to 1,143,697.

Mahanga argued that these projections indicate a significant increase that is not reflected in the current government allocations.

"If the government does not conduct a fresh census soon, this region will continue to be marginalized and manipulated politrically. Development projects will not match the actual needs of the people," he said.
