How police plan to address increased Gender-based violence cases

The National Police Service has embarked on a multi-sectoral approach, to combat the rising cases of sexual and gender based violence in the country.

The NPS plans to collaborate with various stakeholders to end the vice. 

Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga on Tuesday said that the service had established a unit domiciled within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to help with the investigation of reported cases.

The unit comprises criminal intelligence analysts, forensic experts, and other professionals. 

To address cases of GBV, the police have also established a Directorate of Gender and incorporated Gender Desks and Child Protection Units in stations. 

To support survivors of gender-based violence, the service has rolled out Policare, which provides comprehensive support services, including legal, psychosocial, police, and health support.

According to police, they plan to work together with various agencies, including the State Department for Gender and the recently formed Presidential Working Group on Femicide. 

Authorities have encouraged public support by reporting crimes they have witnessed in their area.
