Love for family, golf, and law: How Chebukati's children remember him

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati will be remembered as a man of integrity and honesty, his children said during his burial at his Sabata home in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia.

His sons, Emmanuel and Jonathan, fondly recalled playing golf as a family, a tradition their father had introduced.

“You were a fighter and a team player. Family golf time was your idea, and we had so much fun. Golf will never be the same without you,” Jonathan said.

His daughter, Rachel Nekesa, remembered how her father pushed her to excel, particularly in her studies.

“My confidence comes from my father. He led by example and always set targets for us,” she said.

Nekesa shared how Chebukati instilled a winning spirit in his children, often reminding them that giving up was never an option.

Emmanuel described his father as a pillar of support, always ready to help his family and those in need.

“He never allowed his family to be mistreated,” he said.

Chebukati’s wife, Mary Wanyonyi, recounted how, in the days following his death, social media was flooded with unkind messages about his role in the 2022 General Election.

“Social media has been very unkind to us. I hope people will show kindness now that he has rested,” she said.

Chebukati died in February after battling a brain tumor.
