The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have pledged continued backing for South Sudan’s push toward peace and democratic governance.

In a joint statement issued Monday, May 5, following a two-day official visit to Juba, the AUC and IGAD said they were committed to working with South Sudan’s government and people to maintain peace and promote national unity.

The AUC Chairperson met with President Salva Kiir and senior officials, focusing on preserving the peace deal, encouraging national dialogue  and ensuring credible implementation of the transitional roadmap under the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

“This visit came at a critical time as South Sudan navigates its transitional period and seeks to cement the gains of peace,” said the joint communiqué.

Talks also covered strengthening governance institutions and enhancing coordination with regional and international partners, including the African diplomatic corps and TROIKA representatives.

The joint statement stressed that peace, stability and inclusive governance were essential for South Sudan’s long-term development and integration in the region. It also urged respect for civic space, national cohesion and commitment to compromise.

“The African Union and IGAD stand ready to continue supporting South Sudan in safeguarding peace and building a resilient and prosperous future,” said the communiqué.

South Sudan’s transitional government was formed in 2020 following years of civil conflict, but delays in implementing parts of the peace agreement have drawn concern from regional actors.
