Kenya Forest Service responds to fatal shooting allegations in Trans Nzoia

KFS says the fatality happened during a law enforcement operation in the vast forest.

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has responded to widespread reports alleging that KFS officers shot and killed a form three student on private land in Trans Nzoia County.

In a clarification released on Monday, the Service stated that the incident occurred on the morning of April 7, 2025, within the Makunga Forest Block of the Saboti Forest Station.

According to KFS, the fatality happened during a law enforcement operation aimed at removing individuals who had allegedly encroached upon gazetted forest land to cultivate and construct illegal structures.

KFS reported that the rangers were met with violent resistance from individuals armed with crude weapons.

During the confrontation, one person was fatally wounded, allegedly by a stray bullet.

"The land in question is a gazetted forest under the management of the Kenya Forest Service. Claims that the incident occurred on a private farm are inaccurate and misleading," the statement read.

The Service further noted that investigations into the incident are currently underway and affirmed its cooperation with the National Police Service.

KFS emphasized its commitment to ensuring justice is served.
