Two people have been killed in separate wildlife attacks in Nairobi and Nyeri, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has confirmed.

A 14-year-old girl was mauled by a lion on Sunday evening in Savannah Ranch, located near Nairobi National Park.

At about 7 p.m., the girl, a Grade 7 pupil at a local primary school, was attacked as she was in a residential compound.

Another teenager witnessed the incident and raised the alarm, prompting KWS rangers to respond quickly.

The girl’s body was recovered near the Mbagathi River, with injuries on her lower back. The lion was not found.

"We have set a trap and deployed teams to search the area," said KWS in a statement on Sunday, April 20.

"We are reinforcing security measures to prevent further incidents."

In a separate attack on Friday, a 54-year-old man was trampled by an elephant while grazing in Mere Forest, Kieni East Sub- county, Nyeri.

The man suffered chest injuries and internal trauma. He was rushed to Karatina Sub-county Hospital but died from his injuries. Local police and KWS officers processed the scene.

KWS expressed condolences to the families of the victims saying,  "We are working closely with local law enforcement and communities to enhance safety measures near wildlife areas.”
